Spanish Town

The neighborhood north of the tracks, along Alma, Washington and Jackson Streets, settled by immigrants from Spain by the 1920s.

The Mockbee Weilheimer Addition of 1904 first extended the town north of the railroad. By the 1920s many homes there belonged to families from Spain.

Its Spanish-speaking residents called it La Charca de la Rana, the frog pond, for its muddy, unpaved streets.
