North Bayshore

Between Highway 101 and the bay, North Bayshore is where the Computer History Museum, Google’s headquarters and many tech offices share the land with parks, creeks and the Shoreline trails.

The Computer History Museum opened in 2002 at 1401 N. Shoreline Boulevard, in a building that had belonged to Silicon Graphics. Its exhibit Revolution: The First 2000 Years of Computing opened in 2011 across 20 galleries, and the collection runs from a Cray-1 to an Apple I. (Wikipedia)

The story it tells has local roots. In 1956 William Shockley opened Shockley Semiconductor Laboratory in a former apricot packing shed at 391 San Antonio Road, across town, and an IEEE plaque there marks the Birthplace of Silicon Valley. (Computer History Museum, IEEE Milestone)

The Googleplex, at 1600 Amphitheatre Parkway, was the Silicon Graphics campus; Google leased it from 2003 and bought it in 2006. Beside it, the five-acre Charleston Park was designed together with the campus and won an ASLA Centennial Medallion in 1999. (Wikipedia)

Free MVgo shuttles link North Bayshore with the downtown station at commute times, and the trails of Shoreline and the Stevens Creek Trail reach it on foot or by bike. (Wikipedia)
