Jacob Shumway

The storekeeper and first postmaster credited with naming Mountain View.

Shumway ran the store Richard Carr opened on the stage road in 1852, which Mary J. Gates said was the first house in the town. The Mountain View Historical Association credits him with the name.

Gates praised him in 1895 as an old bachelor “who had a fine ear for the fitness of words,” and closed her history by imagining a future city Shumway “would not know.”
