Stage stop

The stagecoach station on the San Francisco–San Jose road where Mountain View began in the early 1850s.

Stages ran between San Jose and San Francisco from 1850. In 1852 James Campbell built a stand where the coaches changed horses, and a store run by Jacob Shumway opened opposite.

Mary J. Gates summed it up in 1895: “Stage stations are the beginning of many towns.” The railroad of 1864 ended the stage era, and the town moved to the depot.
