Rancho Pastoria de las Borregas

The 1842 Mexican land grant, “ranch of the ewe or lamb pasture,” that covered most of today’s Mountain View and Sunnyvale.

Governor Juan Alvarado granted the rancho to Francisco Estrada in 1842. After Estrada and his wife, Inez Castro, died, it passed to her father, Mariano Castro, who sold half to Martin Murphy Jr. in 1849.

Castro’s half was patented in 1881 and Murphy’s in 1865. The Castro name lives on in Castro Street.
