Castro family

The Californio family that owned Rancho Pastoria de las Borregas and gave Mountain View its main street, its cemetery and its church land.

Mariano Castro took over the rancho in 1845 and, with Frank Sleeper, surveyed the old town’s lots. The family donated the land for the town cemetery, now Pioneer Memorial Park, and in 1905 land at Hope and Church Streets for Saint Joseph Church.

The railroad gave the family its own flag stop, Castro Station, which ran until San Antonio station replaced it in 1999.
