El Camino Real

The old Spanish road, State Route 82, that marks the southern end of downtown and carried the stagecoaches that founded the town.

The first Mountain View grew along this road in the 1850s, and the first public school opened on it near today’s Calderon Avenue. Downtown’s Castro Street ends at El Camino Real.

The road was also home to landmarks remembered by long-time residents, such as Linda’s Drive-In at Escuela Avenue.
