The city bought the land in 1967 for a park, but raising it above flood level was too costly, so it was run as a landfill for San Francisco’s garbage first. The park opened in 1983 and marked its fortieth year in 2023.
It holds a sailing lake, golf links, the Rengstorff House, the Bay Trail and habitat for burrowing owls and monarch butterflies. It is open from 6:30 am until half an hour after sunset.
